How Nintendo Became the Last Bastion of Physical Games Against Digital Monopoly
Physical format in video games is fighting its final battle, and surprisingly, it is the Big N leading the resistance. As an avid player and hard-core collector, I’ve watched the industry embrace a purely digital future, leaving our cherished bookshelves empty. However, while corporate giants like Sony prepare the definitive funeral for discs, Nintendo holds fast to tradition. Even when adapting its formats in ways that could face criticism, the Kyoto-based company has managed to step up to protect a culture many already consider dead.
But before we continue, you might be interested in some of these:
The Sony Scandal: “They knew everyone would be furious”
A storm began when Sony announced the end of PlayStation disc production for January 2028, a historic decision that brought a flood of complaints and criticism from gamers. The most shocking part isn’t the decision itself, but the corporate coldness behind it. According to Alanah Pearce, former Santa Monica Studio employee, Sony already knew everyone would be furious and was well aware that no public backlash would change their mind. The company anticipated the outcry and imposed extremely strict social media guidelines on its employees so they wouldn’t talk about the matter. Simply put: they are prepared and will not back down.
The Industry Turns Its Back: Ubisoft and the GTA VI Phenomenon
Far from opposing it, the rest of the industry seems to tacitly support PlayStation. Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, downplayed the impact by stating that eliminating discs has its pros and cons, but “won’t disrupt the sector too much.” Furthermore, he argued that a digital-only ecosystem will help make new consoles more affordable.
The final nail in the coffin is being driven by the most anticipated game of the decade: Grand Theft Auto VI. It has been confirmed that its physical edition will not include a disc, offering only a download code instead. Regarding this, Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, commented that while the physical format should continue to exist if people demand it, he personally doesn’t care much due to the huge technical advantages of digital environments. Despite shop boycotts and widespread anger, the lack of a disc hasn’t slowed down GTA VI’s success, which is projected to sell 51 million copies in its first week alone.

Nintendo and Its “Game-Key Cards”: Stubbornness Protecting the Gamer
Faced with this bleak landscape where game boxes will arrive empty or disappear altogether, Nintendo emerges as the unlikely hero of the tangible. Throughout its history, the Big N has been harshly criticized for its media choices: from clinging to expensive cartridges on the N64 while everyone migrated to CDs, to using limited mini-DVDs on the GameCube. Today, that very same stubbornness is saving our community.
With the undisputed queen of sales since its launch in June 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2, the Japanese company supports both regular game cards and controversial “Game-Key Cards.” This format is divisive and questionable at first glance, as Game-Key Cards do not contain the full game data, acting solely as a “key” that allows you to download the full title over the internet. However, herein lies Nintendo’s brilliance in protecting the physical market: unlike a single-use digital code, once you download the game, the Game-Key Card must be inserted into your console to play. just like a standard physical game, allowing it to be lent to friends or resold (with internet access only required during the initial download).
“In the writer’s personal experience, Nintendo forcing you to keep and insert the cartridge, even if part of the data is in the cloud, is the masterstroke that will keep game sharing alive with friends and save the second-hand market from complete extinction.”
Newly Leaked Prices for Regular Nintendo Switch 2 Physical Game Cards
The prices recently leaked on X by well-known insider Nash Weedle revealed how much it will cost developers to publish across different standard card sizes for the Nintendo Switch 2. According to the reported details, options for studios will include 16GB for $13, 32GB for $15, and massive 64GB cards for $17. Previously, studios only had the 64GB cartridges as an option, which essentially forced them toward Game-Key Cards due to cost constraints.
If these leaks hold true, we will see a noticeable reduction in Game-Key Card titles, giving way to fully physical games with no download required upon installation. From my perspective as a collector, I view this price tiering as an extremely positive and smart move. By offering affordable high-capacity options to developers, Nintendo is giving them the perfect tools to keep backing physical media without forcing them into empty boxes, single-use codes, or Game-Key Cards, thus further protecting physical format longevity.
Physical vs. Digital Format on Nintendo
This tiered policy makes complete sense when observing recent corporate shifts, as the company officially confirmed globally that Switch 2 digital games will be cheaper than their physical counterparts. The Big N set this price difference to offset manufacturing and distribution costs associated with game cards. As a result, within physical retail, we’ll see differentiated pricing adjusted proportionally based on the scale and experience each game offers. Far from being a drawback, this brings transparency to the market: physical format has real manufacturing value, and Nintendo is building a sustainable ecosystem with tiered pricing to ensure this format doesn’t go extinct.
